The Science of Tsunamis
Maths
inches, feet, yards, miles compared to millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers
Why you can’t see tsunamis far from shore?
Tsunamis are caused by energy originating under water from a volcanic eruption,a submarine landslide,or most commonly an earthquake on the ocean floor caused when the tectonic plates on the Earth's surface slip releasing a massive amount of energy into the water. When it's far from shore, a tsunamis can be barely detectable since it moves through the e of the entire depth of the water. But when it reaches shallow water something called wave shoaling occurs.Because there is water to move through this massive amount of energy is compress.
The immense swell of a tsunami can grow up to 100 feet (35.6 meters), hitting speeds over 500 mph (800) kmph-- a treacherous combination for anyone or anything in its path.
Scientists are seeking to reduce their destruction power in the future.
Maths Problem to solve
If you are interested to compare a tsunami with this building you can see the diference. Or post a comment here and tell me: How many times is this building higher that the tsunami wave.
